In both French and Scottish Gaelic, the province is directly translated as "New Scotland" (French: Nouvelle-Écosse. "Nova Scotia" means "New Scotland" in Latin and is the recognized English-language name for the province. Halifax is the twelfth-largest census metropolitan area in Canada, the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada, and Canada's second-largest coastal municipality after Vancouver.įurther information: Etymology of Scotland Nova Scotia's capital and largest municipality is Halifax, which is home to over 45% of the province's population as of the 2021 census. In 1848, Nova Scotia became the first British colony to achieve responsible government, and it confederated with New Brunswick and the Province of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec) in July 1867 to form what is now the country of Canada. During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), thousands of Loyalists settled in Nova Scotia. In subsequent years, the British began settling " foreign Protestants" in the region and deported the French-speaking Acadians en masse. Britain fought France for the territory on numerous occasions for over a century afterwards, having gained it from them in the 1713 Peace of Utrecht, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1605, Acadia-France's first New France colony-was founded with the creation of Acadia's capital, Port-Royal, in the Mi'kmaq district of Kespukwitk. The land that makes up what is now Nova Scotia was originally inhabited, upon European arrival, by the Mi'kmaq and covers several districts of Mi'kma'ki, notably including their capital at Mniku, Unama'ki (Cape Breton). The province borders the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east, and is separated from Prince Edward Island and the island of Newfoundland by the Northumberland and Cabot straits, respectively. The Nova Scotia peninsula is connected to the rest of North America by the Isthmus of Chignecto, on which the province's land border with New Brunswick is located. I recommend visiting one of the haunted corn mazes if you are looking for a good spooking this time of year.Rankings include all provinces and territories I had fun because our friends made it an enjoyable night, the ghost tour was a huge disappointment but I’m happy to have shared this awful experience with some friends who made me laugh so it wasn’t a complete bust. Also, it says he accepted debit, but only if you have Tap, so thankfully a friend had cash and I etransferred her. We spent so much time trying to get our large tour group in a perfect semi-circle at each stop. In retrospect, we wouldn’t have missed much. In our group of 6, we all considered leaving the tour half way through due to boredom, but out of respect, we tried to stay engaged. We expected to be spooked (our purpose for doing the tour a week before Halloween) however, we spent more time laughing at the WTF look on our friends faces. This tour could/should have been named “Halifax history walking tour” as it had very little to do with ghosts. The tour was filled with historical information but it was not what we expected. In fact, there only seemed to be one location (The five fisherman restaurant) of all the stops we made, that had an actual physical ghost encounter. Include more ghost stories! This was a 1hour and 45 minute walking tour and there was very little about actual ghost encounters.
